Algarve is the not-so-hidden gem of Portugal. Like most places, the Algarve is split into many personalities. Lagos is the cavalcade queen of the Algarve, with its cobbled streets, young crowd and ample nightlife. Tavira, with a history dating back to the Romans, is set along a serene river and remains ever so elegant and phlegmatic. And Monchique, a charming town with stunning views over the expansive countryside.
Nevertheless, it isn’t just all parties and crowds of people. The Algarve is still actually rather underdeveloped, especially on the Spanish border around Alcoutim. This makes the place also rich with a historical culture that makes it that oh so more interesting. The market town of Loulé and the Roman ruins of Milreu are both worth a visit from Faro and the old Moorish town of Silves is easily accessed from Portimão. There isn’t a place in Europe better to visit.
